H. Herder began in February 1727 with Peter Herder, who bought two cutlery marks, including the black and white ace of spades in a square from Peter Brickmann; the square distinguished it from the similar F. Herder Abr. Sohn mark. Herder made cutlery, tableware, tools, pocket knives, scissors and straight razors. Henriette Herder inherited the trademarks and registered “H. Herder” in March 1865, passing them to her son Liebrecht Morsbach, owner of the Solinger Adressbuch-Verlag and publisher of the Deutsches Reichs-Adressbuch. The square ace of spades was registered in 1895.
