Background

From Holbein pattern to RZM

Introduced in 1933 and modelled on the 16th-century Swiss “Holbein” dagger, the SA service dagger was one of the earliest standardised dress daggers of the period. NSKK members wore the same dagger until 1936, when black scabbards were introduced to set them apart.

More than 240 firms produced these daggers. Each blade carried the maker’s trademark until RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) codes took over from 1936, and the small differences between makers are what collectors study today.

  1. 1933–1935

    Early production

    High-quality materials, hand-finished etching, solid nickel silver fittings and maker trademarks.

  2. 1936–1938

    RZM standardisation

    RZM control of production and codes on blades; materials begin to shift to cheaper alternatives.

  3. 1939–1942

    Wartime decline

    Material shortages and changing priorities lower the quality until production ends.
