Founded by August Merten in 1910 as August Merten Witwe Eichenlaub GmbH, the company registered with the Solingen authorities on 30 June 1919 and was based at Brühlstraße 7, Solingen-Gräfrath. After August Merten’s death it became “August Merten Witwe” (widow). It made table cutlery, carving sets and meat, fruit and vegetable knives. The “Eichenlaub” (oak leaf) brand, created in 1928, stood for first-class traditionally forged cutlery.
