In 1840 Carl Gottlieb Haenel began producing bicycles and weapons — an unlikely combination, but both need similar production methods and skills. In 1887 the Suhl weapon designer C. W. Aydt joined to produce his target rifle, and Haenel later took a share of army rifle production as part of the Suhl consortium. During World War I Haenel produced hunting weapons, bayonets and large numbers of Mauser rifles.
