Founded in Suhl in 1751 by Lorenz Sauer, J.P. Sauer & Sohn is the oldest recorded gun maker in Germany. In 1840 the owner Johann Paul and his son Lorenz created the name and trademark J.P. Sauer & Sohn. By 1938 about 1,450 people worked for the company, and by 1941 Sauer was, after Mauser, one of the most important makers of the Karabiner 98k. Sauer also produced the MP43/StG 44 alongside Haenel, and in 1922 even the Fortuna typewriter.
