Founded in June 1731 by Peter Henckels, Zwilling J.A. Henckels registered the “Zwilling” (twins) trademark with the Cutlers’ Guild of Solingen in 1771, making it one of the earliest trademarked companies. Peter’s son, Johann Abraham Henckels, renamed the brand after himself. Henckels opened its first outlet in Berlin in 1818, then shops in New York (1883) and Vienna (1884). It won medals at the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Paris Grand Prix of 1900 and the St. Louis Grand Prix of 1904, and was appointed knife supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court of Austria-Hungary.
