In 1827 Friedrich Wilhelm Backhaus founded F.W. Backhaus GmbH Stahlwarenfabrik in Hilden near Solingen-Ohligs. In 1875 he was succeeded by his son Robert, his brother Friedrich Wilhelm, his sister Julie and Benjamin Graef. The firm made combat knives during World War I, and in the 1920s cutlery, kitchen knives, scissors and corkscrew pocket knives. Backhaus registered several trademarks: an X below a star (1897), a baby on a stork (1902), “El Charro” above a Mexican cowboy (1904) and two crossed brushes (1912).

“Absolutely stunning in every aspect. So much background information that has been missed in other books. Definitely worth the price.”
