Gottfried Jetter, a trained cutler, set up a workshop in 1867 making surgical instruments in Tuttlingen. The firm took the name of its founders, “Jetter & Scheerer”, Gottfried and his two brothers-in-law. From 1889 the Aesculap staff with a snake and a crown was its registered trademark, and the AESCULAP name became a symbol of quality. Branches opened in Berlin, New York, Paris, Constantinople, Buenos Aires, Tokyo and London. By 1914 the company employed over 1,700 people, and its 1922 catalogue ran to 2,848 pages.
